A very common question; do they shed a lot?
Well, eh, that depends 😄

The amount of coat depends on several factors

  • Climate. Where does the Silken live, what country, what climate? How cold is it really and how much time does the dog spend outside in really cold wheather?
  • Food, good quality food will produce bigger coats than food of lesser quality
  • Genes, some lines carry more coat than others
  • Intact females will shed approx 4 months after being in season, but can still amass quite a lot of coat in between
  • Adult males that has shed the junior/youth coat and has the adult coat, can add more and more coat at least up until around 10 years of age.
  • It is not uncommon that really old Silkens will have less coat than they had in their prime.
  • Some will say that white coats, even just the white parts of a dog, will shed more than the other colors. They will at least shed faster than the darker colors.

The same dog during shedding. The white coat has already shed most of it while the darker coat still remain a lot longer.

The more coat the dog has, the more it will shed.

The first shed occurs about the time the puppy is teething.

You can see the first puppy fuzz disappearing, it is common to see it very clearly along the back, like this

The first junior/puppy coat, it is different when that comes off.

For girls I have mostly seen them wait to drop the junior coat until about 4 months after the first time they have been in season. Since that normally happens between 12 and 24 months of age, it is hard to predict in advance when the junior coat will drop

As for males, and I live in a cold climate, it often depends on what time of year they were born. If they were born during summer or fall, they will keep their junior coat all through the next winter but seem to be too young (not quite or about a year old) to shed in the spring. These males often keep their junior coat for another full year and drop the junior coat in the spring when they a lot older than you would expect for a real shed out.
