Questions that are often asked are:
- Is the Silken Windhound a recognized breed?
- Where is the Silken Windhound recognized?
The country of origin of the Silken Windhound is the United States. In the USA, the breed is recognized by UKC, but not yet by AKC.
Outside the United States, the breed is recognized in some countries whose kennel clubs are members of the FCI. In those countries, recognition exists at the national level — country by country — but the breed is still not recognized by the FCI itself.
2004 — Slovenia
2011 — United States (UKC)
2022 — Switzerland
2022 — Hungary
2023 — Belgium
2023 — Germany
2024 — Netherlands
2026 — Finland
Recognition at the national level comes with certain limitations.
📄 Official FCI rules for non-recognized breeds at dog shows
In the FCI’s Regulations for FCI Dog Shows, the following is stated (very clearly):
✅ Breeds not recognized by the FCI (neither definitively nor provisionally):
- must have national recognition and
- must be registered in a national studbook system recognized by FCI member organizations.
- these breeds may be shown in the catalogue, but they are not included in any of the official FCI groups.
- they are placed in a special catalogue section labelled:
“breeds not recognized by the FCI”.
⚠️ They are not allowed to participate in the official group or BIS finals:
- the breeds cannot be incorporated into any of the 10 FCI groups (Group 1–10) and therefore cannot participate in Best of Group (BIG).
- they are not eligible to participate in Best in Show (BIS) finals at FCI-CACIB shows.
- they are not eligible for FCI titles such as CACIB or FCI Champion titles.
📌 This generally means:
- a non-recognized breed may receive Best of Breed (BOB) in its special catalogue category for non-FCI recognised breeds,
- but BOG/BIG and BIS are not available, since they require placement within an official FCI group and titles of FCI character.
🐾 Practical consequence in show context
- Best of Breed for a non-recognized breed is listed separately in the catalogue — it competes in its own category, not in a group.
- This BOB is not placed in Group finals against officially recognized breeds.
- No Best in Group and therefore no Best in Show for these breeds takes place — the finals are for Group 1–10 winners only.
