Are Silken Windhounds recognized in AKC?

The short answer is: no —they are currently not fully recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC)

However, the breed has recently (April 2026) been accepted into the AKC Foundation Stock Service (FSS), which is an important first step toward potential future recognition.

The FSS is not full recognition. Dogs in the FSS program cannot compete in regular AKC conformation shows, but the breed is officially recorded and can participate in certain AKC events such as performance sports.

Recognition processes vary between kennel clubs, and full AKC recognition typically requires:
– A sufficient population size
– A stable and documented breed standard
– An organized parent club
– Time and development within the FSS program

The inclusion of Silken Windhounds in the AKC Foundation Stock Service marks a significant milestone — especially as it represents the first formal step toward recognition in the breed’s country of origin.

This step is particularly notable, as the Silken Windhound originated in the United States. Recognition in the country of origin carries both symbolic and practical importance for the breed’s recognition outside USA.

More detailed information will be added to this page as official statements are released by ISWS and the AKC Foundation Stock Service.
